Recently, BlueSky Mind Studio participant Logan had the opportunity to visit the Channel Seven studio at Hindmarsh to explore the world of live broadcasting and media production.
Logan has been actively involved in school musicals and drama groups, showing a strong interest in performing arts. He spoke to his NDIS Employment Coach, Jodie about wanting to experience a professional television studio and live broadcasting environment to understand how it differs from stage performance such as Broadway style productions.
Loganโs dream is to be cast in television commercials or acting roles, however he is also curious about working off camera in production or technical roles within the television industry.
To explore the industry, Jodie was able to use her connections to organise a guided Channel Seven visit with full-time weather presenter Casey Trelor.
To prepare for the visit, Jodie worked with Logan to prepare a list of interview questions for Casey so he could truly understand the journalistic role.
The visit was eye-opening for Logan, gaining firsthand insight into how a major news broadcaster operates, including studio workflow, roles across departments, and the technical process behind producing the nightly news.
During the visit, Logan entered the live broadcast studio, observed professional equipment such as teleprompters and cameras, and watched a presenter record the 4pm news brief. He was able to gain insight into the production, editing, live broadcasting and taping process. He learnt that if it is a taped recording, you can re-record as many times as needed, however for live broadcasting you must regroup and pick up where you made the mistake.
While chatting with Casey, Logan learned about the day-to-day reality of working in broadcast media. Casey shared that her typical workday begins at 12pm, followed by hair and makeup preparation from 1pm to 2pm. She then heads to her broadcast location at around 3:30pm before delivering the live weather report at 7pm.
Casey also spoke about her career journey into the industry. After studying journalism at university, she began posting a live blog, which led to a work experience opportunity with Channel Seven. From there, she was offered a junior journalism role, progressed to presenting weekend weather, and eventually became a full-time weather presenter. Casey shared how much she enjoys her work and highlighted that studying for a university degree in journalism is a good start to getting into the industry.
During the visit, Logan also identified several key skills required to succeed as a presenter, including confidence, public speaking, teamwork, research, and camera skills.
One of the highlights of the day was accompanying Casey to Moseley Square to observe a live weather cross. Logan also had the opportunity to assist in drafting the weather report script, learning how content must be prepared and submitted to the editor before a live cross.
Logan also learnt how editors require footage ahead of time, and how live crosses are coordinated between field reporters and studio teams. He witnessed the live cross to the studio and later viewed the delayed telecast on the 7+ app, reinforcing his understanding of how live and delayed broadcasts differ.
